Have you ever had someone look you in the eyes and you just know how much they care? This is what I experienced. I was in CVICU recovering from open heart surgery; needless to say I was anxious and a bit scared. My nurse was Jon Hittle. I have been in the hospital several times over the course of my life and never experienced human kindness and care like this.
Jon is a quiet, unassuming nurse. He came into my room explained things in a soft, calm manner. Every time he entered, he looked me in the eyes and asked me how I was and how the pain was. Jon ensured that my every little need was met. He was an educator; explaining my lines, tubes, medications, etc... He even told me things I didn't want to hear but needed to hear, such as "you will be getting up at 5:30 am to sit in the chair and it will hurt". Just when I thought I couldn't do something, Jon would coach me and get me through the situation. Jon got me through what could have been one of the roughest nights of my life and I have to say it turned out to be one of the best experiences ever.
Jon is the caring spirit that makes St. Mary's a wonderful place. I want him to know how much I appreciate his care and compassion. Just look in his eyes and you know how much he cares.
