On the evening shift of Sunday, John ran to a first responder across the Aurora Psychiatric Hospital campus. He was quick to recognize a potential opioid overdose and worked as a team to initiate BLS and administer Narcan. Thanks to John, the patient was awake by the time first responders took over.
John then went back to the unit and finished his shift successfully, making sure the other staff members were progressing through their workflow and debriefed emotionally. Regardless of schooling or training, life-threatening situations will always be scary to the medical professional. John handled a delicate situation with compassion and empathy, truly saving a life that day that wasn't even his own patient. His commitment to his role as a nurse, as well as harm reduction practices is admirable and inspired. I feel safe at work when John is on shift.
