I wanted to let you know what a great experience I had in the emergency department. I had to bring my daughter in. She's been under a great deal of stress over the last few weeks and I think it all finally culminated over the weekend after a break up with her boyfriend. Her stress seemed to present itself in the form of some sensory issues and some weird things going on with swallowing, numbness, etc. In any event, we arrived at the ED around 12 noon on Sunday and fairly quickly were taken back.
Her RN, Joe Gingo, man oh man was he fantabulous! Seriously, what a great nurse! He talked with my daughter about what was going on, the stress of going from HS to college, the 3-week intense CNA class that she just took, the State CNA test she is taking this week and congratulated her on starting ASU next week for nursing school. He talked with her about what she does to alleviate stress, her circle of friends, volunteering, spirituality, etc. He just really was personable and seemed to also be concerned about her overall wellbeing and not just whatever symptoms were currently presenting. He made some suggestions that Mom has been making all along, but because they came from a man who is an RN, was a CNA, went through nursing school, his encouraging words did not fall on deaf ears this time. I think she really listened to what he had to offer and took it to heart.
In any event, I've worked here at Mercy for almost 11 years and have seen a lot and have brought my kids into the ED a few different times, but this by far was the best experience because we truly felt like we weren't just a faceless patient sitting in the waiting area or in the back, but we were family. Joe seemed like her big brother giving her good advice and not just an RN trying to get his vitals done, documentation done, job done, and cross her off the list. He truly was compassionate and empathetic to how difficult life can be right now with all the transition going on, and how to overcome or deal with the stress.
I wanted you to know, great hire in him for sure!
