Recently, I had a very critical patient. He was on CRRT and it was one of my first times doing it. Joahna was always in my room, checking on me, available to answer my questions, and genuinely concerned to see me succeed. She demonstrated the importance of following policy, and though the therapy was difficult, she was pushing me to develop my skill and continual growth. She has always been this way. When I first started she welcomed me to the unit with open arms, involving me in the unit activities, inviting me to my first Miami Teaching Institute where we had a great time learning about the advancements in our practices in Critical Care, and even though she wasn't assigned to precept me, made sure to watch over me. She encouraged me to continue to maintain my competencies, and always seek to find better outcomes through Evidenced Based practices and studies. Watching and learning from Joahna is like watching the nurse you want to become: Confident, compassionate, an advocate, knowledgeable, experienced, altruistic, the list goes on, and her patient's reap the benefits. She definitely provides the TLC that any patient needs, and even more for the critical ICU patients. I've seen her hold a patient's hand through painful times, and I've seen her educate a distraught family. She serves as a resource, a preceptor, a competency validator and is steadfast in upholding our unit and WKBH's desire to be excellent and a source of high-quality care in our community.
