Nurse Jo Adderly shows compassion and dedication to every patient for whom she provides care. Ms. Jo sees her job as an operating room nurse as a privilege and an honor.
Many patients are scared and anxious about having surgery and are feeling very vulnerable. I have watched her calm patients' loved ones and reassure them that they are in good hands. She treats every patient like they are her own family members.
There isn't just one example of how wonderful she is with her patients, but I'll highlight one recent example. I watched her hold a crying patient's hand during anesthesia induction. As the extremely anxious patient drifted off to sleep, Jo calmly spoke to her and comforted her. Her heartfelt manner with that patient moved me. She really made a difference for that patient that day. It may seem like such a small gesture, but our patients in the OR need nurses like Jo who show kindness and empathy with everything they do.
It's not as though I don't see other OR nurses do these same things, but the way Jo does it is exceptional. She takes ownership of her operating room and patient safety is of the utmost importance to her. Our patients rarely remember us and as a fellow OR nurse, I wanted to make sure everyone else knows how fortunate we are to have her in our department. Day in and day out, her passion for patient advocacy is laudable and I aspire to be just like her one day!
