After losing both parents inside ten months, my family was reeling, confused and grief-stricken. We ushered both parents through terminal diseases (Alzheimer's and lung cancer). We became very familiar with hospice care and the nurses who provide the care. Just when we thought the dust settled, our brother was diagnosed with terminal neck and tongue cancer. He was admitted to Henry Ford Macomb for nausea and other problems. My brother began a near-fatal bleed in his lower throat. HFM got him stabilized, but it became clear my brother would need hospice care at HFM.
On the night before my brother died, Nicole made beds for us in the room and coached us throughout the night about how to comfort and care for our brother. She brought us food, water and blankets. I have never experienced such kindness and compassion!
Nicole and Jessica were compassionate, knowledgeable, tireless and extraordinarily competent. With a family full of nurses, we found these two nurses exceptional. Both stayed past their shifts to help, and they helped us navigate all of the tough decisions. They both deserve an award.
