I nominate Jessica Cowen for the DAISY Award. I think she is an outstanding nurse because:

She is always welcoming of new employees. When I first started at Dell Children’s Jessica immediately took me under her wing and made me feel like part of the family. I felt as if I had been working here for years. Since I’ve been hired I have watched her do the same for several other employees.

She is so willing to help with anything that needs to be done around the unit without complaint or pause. If someone needs help starting an IV, giving meds, assisting with holding during a procedure, etc. she is there in an instant, ready and willing with a smile.

Jessica is extremely knowledgeable and has never hesitated to take the time to answer questions. She is the one who everyone goes to if they have a question about something or are uncertain of how something is done. If she doesn’t know the answer to a question (which is rare) she will find the answer for you and get back to you ASAP.

Jessica stays composed in stressful conditions and provides instructions in an emergency, making peers feel calm and making a hectic situation feel much more manageable.

She is always very thoughtful of her patients and the parents or guardians who are with them. Explains in detail how things work, what’s being done, the meds being given, etc. If the parents are upset or worried she takes the time to make them feel like their child will be given the best care possible while they are here. One great example of this is when one of our patients coded while downstairs getting a procedure done. Of course Jessica immediately jumps into action but unfortunately Dad panicked and grabbed the ambu bag out of her hands and started bagging his son on his own. She immediately took the bag back and explained to dad that’s not how it works (he was bagging way too quickly) and that she would take care of him. After the patient was recovered Dad was so grateful for the care and patience he started crying, hugged her and thanked her for helping his son.

Jessica worries about the comfort of her patients and does her best to put them at ease. She is great with children and when there is a patient who is aggressive or struggling against the care that is needed she is called upon to defuse the situation.

Jessica is responsible for several things around the unit, including the schedules, and is always accommodating and fare when assigning days to work.

She organizes potlucks for our unit so that we can all stay connected as a family and tries to bring as much happiness to our working environment as she can.

Jessica arrives to work with a smile and an awesome can do attitude each and every day that I have the pleasure of working with her.

These are just a few examples of why I think Jessica is an outstanding one. She does so much for our unit and coworkers! She is a vital part of our team and we can’t thank her enough.
