The patient's entire demeanor had changed by that afternoon and the wife reported on the phone that the patient had said to his wife "I got a good nurse today who is going to help me get everything figured out".
I have had the unique experience of getting to work with Jessica (as her paired helping hand assignment on the COVID unit) and also having her care for my mom while she was hospitalized this summer. When Jessica was caring for my mom in August, she made my mom and myself feel like we were her only patient even though I know from working here also that our census was high and she must have been very busy. She took the time to have conversations with my mom and me and really connected with us. The hospitalization had the potential to be very frustrating for my family, but Jessica helped ease our anxieties and made us feel heard and seen by my mom's team of providers. Her individualized care and personal but professional demeanor were so appreciated by myself and my mom that we talked about her "best nurse, Jess" for months after and I immediately recognized Jess in November when I was assigned to work with her on the Broadway Campus.
While working with Jess, I quickly saw that it was not only my mom that Jess helped feel heard and cared for - she does this for all of her patients. We were told in report that there was one gentleman we were assigned to who was very angry and threatening to leave AMA when that wasn't a plausible option for him. Within the first two hours, Jess had sat down and had a good conversation with the patient, the case manager, and the patient's family members (over the phone) and got to the root causes of their frustrations. Jess then printed off word puzzles to give the patient something to occupy his mind, brought in earplugs for the loud monitors, and gave the patient his first shower in almost a week. The patient's entire demeanor had changed by that afternoon and the wife reported on the phone that the patient had said to his wife "I got a good nurse today who is going to help me get everything figured out" and had agreed to stay another night at least. This level of compassion as well as Jessica's attention to detail and thorough care of her patients that I was able to observe from the patient side and as a coworker demonstrates her extraordinary nursing qualities.
