Jessica had a patient who had recently lost work due to the ongoing pandemic. This patient was very upset, crying, bordering on an anxiety attack, because she was running out of her home medications and did not have the financial resources to get them. Jessica received this patient 10 minutes prior to her shift ending but stayed late in order to comfort the patient, get all of the patient's information for prescriptions, and find a way to have them vouchered so the patient would at least be covered for the month. Jessica advocated for her patient and made sure her needs were met and was even willing to pay for the patient's medications out of her own pocket if she had to. She did not want to leave, even though her shift was over because she wanted to be absolutely sure that her patient would be able to get her prescriptions. Seeing how caring she was towards this patient reminded me how important it is to have a human connection with our patients, and how our actions can have such a large impact on them. Jessica is a compassionate advocate for her patients, and I admire how she handled this situation.
