Let me start by saying that my son is not the easiest patient. He's not always compliant, isn't always nice to the staff, and can be downright mean sometimes. Jessie was his nurse day one post-op from a spleno-renal shunt placement. He was having a lot of pain and did not want to do anything that Jessie asked him to do. She was patient yet firm and set small goals with him. By the end of day one, she had managed to convince him to get up in a chair and walk to the restroom a few times. Jessie was very diligent in her nursing care. Even though my son didn't want to get up or walk, she kept explaining the "why" behind the importance. She was also very compassionate while he was having a difficult/painful ultrasound. She placed her hand on his leg and gently rubbed him, apologized for it hurting and calmly comforted him through the procedure. She kept us, the family, informed constantly and communicated well.
Day two, post-op, she was not my son's nurse, but she stopped in to check on himand made sure that everything had been handled from the day prior. She also helped throughout the day with different issues even though she wasn't assigned to him.
Day three was the morning we arrived on the unit and were greeted by Jessie asking if everything was ok. She knew that we had some concerns about leaving today and my son still being in the hospital. She wanted to make sure that we had everything set up before we leave.
I have high expectations about the care that patients receive. Jessie exceeded my expectations. Nebraska Medicine is lucky to have her.
