I was making leadership rounds one day and came across a patient who had a complicated surgical history as well as a sad recent event of losing her husband- less than a month ago. She was relaying how caring the nurses on the unit are and how much they made her stay easier and how she appreciated all that they did. I asked if she had anyone in particular in mind. She said that Jesse was special. I asked what he did. She said that he was working the night shift and he asked her if there was anything that she could have right now, what would it be? She said she would have pizza and a strawberry daiquiri. The patient said that not long after that, Jesse came in with a piece of pizza he had purchased himself and he made her a 'daiquiri' out of Jell-O and a frozen popsicle and she "didn't know quite what else, but it was delicious."
When I am rounding I hear many stories about how Jesse made a difference in peoples' lives by being a listening ear, or by joking with them, or by just being what they need at that time. He takes that extra time to find out what a person needs and this shows true compassion and makes Jesse extraordinary.
