I wanted to share with you the experience our team had with one of your nurses, Jeremy Dean, RN. Jeremy was the RN for a patient who presented to the ED with Respiratory failure and received a devastating diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer. Unfortunately, she was so advanced she was unable to receive treatment for it. Our oncology team along with the palliative medicine team had the difficult task of discussing comfort care and hospice. During this time, Jeremy was so supportive of the patient, her husband, and their two sons. His compassion and excellent care made a lasting impact on this family. When I went down to see the patient's husband on Wednesday in the hospice suite, the husband tearfully said, "Jeremy was exceptional and he even hugged me when he left". What I would like to reiterate is that Jeremy is on the orthopedics unit and isn't faced with this type of situation every day. His kindness and exemplary care are what nursing is all about. I would also like to add that the family said they had received great care the entire time of the admission. This included the ED as well as the oncology/hospice unit. So often we do not hear the positive impact you make on a family who is faced with an overwhelming life changing event.
