I would like to nominate Jenny Romlein, RN from Partial Day Hospital as a deserving recipient of the DAISY Award. This registered nurse should receive the award for her clinical skills, compassionate care, exemplary service and for her continued commitment to excellence.

The following are specific examples of the nominees’ extraordinary commitment to patient-centered care:

To some of us, she is a new angel in our lives, while others have come to know and love her over the past thirty years at subsequent intervals. Because of Jenny being at Day Hospital, she may not be well known to the general St. Joe staff, but we would hasten to add that she has deeply touched and influenced the lives of others-perhaps more than any hospital personnel. She has taken the shards of shattered souls and gently nourished them to heal. Our lives are better and richer, fuller and healthier for having known her. She sees beyond our broken lives and opens us to new potential, new hope, new freedom. I would share with you some of the comments this suggestion elicited: Extremely understanding, I can tell how I feel without feeling threatened, safe, like a mom to me, she listens with care, Intelligent, understanding, a great woman, genuinely caring, super, loving, gentle, sense of humor, extremely committed, kind, helps guide patients to solutions for personal problems. Kept me from committing suicide (more than one such comment) such a caring empathic person would be a welcome addition to any hospital, and it is our collective feeling that such an exemplary should be rewarded and honored. I am writing regarding Jenny Romlein. At this time we are treating an extremely fragile young lady in the Partial Day Hospital Program. Jenny has carried out her traditional responsibilities superlatively. She is also making several additional contributions. Jenny has been active as an advocate for this patient. She has made unique observations, which are leading to innovative treatment suggestions. The most valuable contribution has been the extra time Jenny has spent with this young lady when she was on the threshold of severe regression. This extra effort has prevented a hospitalization and is probably saving a live. I wish to express my utmost appreciation. Sincerely, Andrew Pasternak, MD

Jenny Romlein is the nurse in charge of the Partial Day Hospital. She may be considered an “old timer” in Behavioral Med., but she is also considered by her peers to be the heart of the dept. She is the sole RN at PHP. She has created all the education plans, and programs them for individual groups and patients. Her assessment of patients is second to none. Physicians and staff rely on not only her clinical expertise, but more importantly in psych nursing, her “instincts” of the patients’ issues. Jenny is very astute at assessing medical complications, which require urgent care. For example: A patient arrived in the morning at the Day Hospital with severe edema. Jenny immediately determined that he should be seen in the ED and the patient was ultimately admitted and successfully stabilized. Multiple examples of her skill and caring are too numerous to describe in this nomination. The best example of her extraordinary care is that she is the person you would want to take care of you so someone you love. She makes every patient feel special and loved.
