Jennifer Lawrence is an example of quiet compassion on our unit. Besides volunteering outside of work for the Lifeline Medical trip to Haiti, she is a wonderful example of a mentor for our nurse interns.

The story I want to tell is of the caring compassion I witnessed with Jennifer and her nurse intern, Megan. Jennifer was caring for a woman on our unit who was actively dying. Our patient had no family, just a friend who was out of town. During that day, Jennifer and Megan took turns sitting with the patient, holding her hand, talking with her and replacing her chipped nail polish with a matching color. Jen had cared for this patient the day before and let the roommate’s visitor bring in some flowers to brighten the room. This woman was unable to speak or acknowledge anyone, but we know the time and caring had to be comforting. This extra attention was given throughout the day without any fanfare.

I was just thinking about how this moved me with the compassion and professionalism she showed to go above and beyond and to lead by example. What a wonderful way to show her nurse intern the way to compassionate caring.

I feel privileged to have witnessed this and feel Jennifer is an extraordinary nurse
deserving of the Daisy Award. I feel honored to work with her.
