In April of 2020, the community State Veterans Home (SVH) experienced a COVID outbreak among its staff and patients. They reported to us that they didn't have testing supplies and other means to care for worsening patients. The Mann-Grandstaff VA Medical Center agreed to assist the SVH by taking all their COVID positive patients. This amounted to over 30 patients. Jennifer Calkins was a key staff member for setting up a unit that would meet the needs of these COVID patients. Jenny collaborated with Engineering, logistics, EMS, the Incident Command Team, and anesthesia daily. Jenny organized all the COVID unit staff from throughout the facility, made their schedules, developed the skills and training they needed. Ms. Calkins oriented the DEMPS staff to the unit and conducted daily huddles with the COVID team. She assisted with the development of the PAPR room. Jenny frequently consulted with the SVH staff and worked long hours every shift to ensure the unit's staff needs were met. Ms. Calkins participated in the demobilization of the units as well, assisting with getting staff cleared by Employee Health and back to their home units and ensuring all the supplies and equipment used during the mobilization of the COVID unit were returned. Jenny conducted a debriefing with all the nursing staff and developed lessons learned, successes, and missed opportunities. These will be utilized within daily practices and again if needed for another pandemic in the future.
