When Jennifer Burmeister, center, earned her DAISY Award in April, she was joined by Chief Nursing Officer Lynn Frank, right, and her mother, Barb Cramer, the director of Ear, Nose & Throat, Weight Management, and Allergy & Asthma.

There’s a book and a movie about “What to Expect When You Are Expecting.”

But the real story is this: Expect anything and everything. No two births are the same.
The one constant is what a difference a special caregiver can make.

Enter registered nurse Jennifer Burmeister, Women’s Health Center at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire, Wis. In nominating Jennifer for the DAISY Award for Exceptional Nurses, a patient describes her appreciation of Jennifer as “calming my new-mommy fears.”

“Jennifer’s care for us is an excellent example of relationship-based care in terms of how she supported both my husband and myself as we strived to keep our birth plan (no pain meds) and helped us with the transition to our new birth plan (get the baby out without a C-section),” the patient writes. “Her caring and experience put our fears at ease (as much as possible in that situation) and helped us to be prepared for the delivery process.”

When Jennifer’s shift ended before the baby was born, she called back later to find out the baby’s gender and to check on her patient. The care she provides her patients is returned to her immeasurably, she says. “Patients help you, too. It’s a two-way street. I take a lot home from them, too,” she says, pointing to conversations she has had with patients about her two young boys and the little girl she and her husband are adopting from Ethiopia.

The patient says she received “excellent care” when she was in the hospital, and Jennifer symbolized that for her: “When I talk about my fabulous care at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire, it’s Jennifer’s compassion I think of.”

Being a nurse at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire runs in Jennifer’s family. Her mom, registered nurse Barb Cramer, is director of Weight Management, Allergy & Asthma, and Ear, Nose & Throat.

“If you had asked me in high school if I would have been a nurse, I would have told you, ‘No,’” Jennifer says with a laugh. “But I love being here with my mom and sharing this. She’s so proud of where she works.”

“I’m so proud of her,” says Barb, who attended the surprise DAISY Award ceremony for Jennifer.

Jennifer says she also has found a “family within a family” with her Women’s Health Center colleagues. “I love it here,” says Jennifer, who has worked in the department for a year and a half. “It’s a good group that works so well together.”
