Jennifer is compassionate towards her orientees because she knows how stressful the ICU environment can be for even the most seasoned ICU nurse.
In today's world of nursing, precepting new nurses is a greater challenge than ever before. Regulatory requirements are always increasing and changing. Nurses are responsible to stay up to date on these changes and ensure that they incorporate them into their practice. This is an added challenge to the normal role of a preceptor.
Precepting in the ICU also adds many additional challenges. Many new team members come to us with little or no ICU experience, some as new graduate nurses. Precepting a nurse to the ICU requires an abundance of patience, knowledge, and dedication. Jennifer has been an ICU nurse for 15 years here at Bayshore. Since I have been in my role as a manager, Jennifer is courageous and always willing to take on a new team member and she takes the role very seriously. She treats them like a blank slate and covers every detail with them; she is creative in her approach and knows that not every orientee can be taught the same way. She shows them what it means to be a conscientious nurse that does not ever take shortcuts.
Jennifer shows her preceptees the meaning of collaboration by demonstrating how, even with all her years of experience, she still relies on her team members as a resource and support. She understands and appreciates what an important part she plays in the care of our patients and impresses that responsibility on her orientees. She wants to see anyone she is precepting succeed and does everything she can to help them be successful in the process. She is compassionate towards her orientees because she knows how stressful the ICU environment can be for even the most seasoned ICU nurse.
Even after her role as a preceptor is complete, she continues to serve as a resource for her orientees. I wish that every preceptor was as dedicated to not only our new nurses but to the nursing profession in general. She is an asset not only to the nurses that she precepts but to our team as well. Jennifer has her BSN is on the CARE ladder and is currently working on her passing CCRN.
