I was hospitalized on the Trauma Service for 3 days on Gibbon 7. The care was overall wonderful. While everyone was great, one nurse Jenna Fleekop, stood out. From the moment I entered the room, Jenna was right there. I was in a bike accident. Luckily, I had no head injury, although I had left my helmet at home. I had a pneumothorax and several broken ribs. Several aspects of Jenna's care were exceptional. First of all, she was extremely focused on trying to make me comfortable. As my fractures were on my back this was not an easy task. Jenna stuck with me as we worked hard on positioning, padding, and clothing. Throughout it all, Jenna kept up the great encouraging conversation. Even more interesting and important to me was that Jenna was virtually the only person who knew that I didn't need another lecture on wearing a helmet. I was guilty and frightened enough to know that, although virtually every person I encountered felt it was his or her obligation to admonish me. Jenna's maturity and understanding were great for me, as she knew that I had enough. The severity of my injuries and stress of the accident and my guilt at not wearing a helmet were enough for me to know that it would never happen again. I was lucky to have Jenna as my nurse for a second night. Her professionalism beyond her years, compassion for my situation, and great spirit and humor certainly made my recovery and quick discharge possible. Ms. Fleekop is a star. I haven't yet mentioned that I was a Jefferson Physician for 25 years, and have worked with hundreds of nurses in the Neonatal ICU. Jenna has a bright future. I was so pleased to be a part of her experience.
