An elderly man and his wife came to an initial appointment. He was in a wheelchair and she used a cane to ambulate. The man complained of heartburn and became very anxious and unable to concentrate on the reason for his appointment. Jay Baum, LPN was asked to come see this gentleman to determine if he was experiencing a medical crisis. Jay willingly dropped what he was doing, came to the office with blood pressure machine, obtained a history from this gentleman which revealed he had acid reflux but had not brought his pills with him. Rolaids was suggested but he did not have any.
Jay went to the hospital gift shop (at the opposite end of the hospital) and purchased a roll of Rolaids and brought them back to the office. This gentleman took two and reported almost an immediate benefit. He was then able to relax and concentrate on the appointment focus.
He and his wife were very grateful for Jay's help and how he went out of his way to help. Without Jay's help, it would have been impossible to proceed with our appointment that day and would need to be rescheduled, which would have been an inconvenience for this couple and would have delayed this gentleman's entry into treatment.
