I have had the pleasure of working with Jasmyn Byers and have been able to get know her as a person and a nurse from her participation in the Unit Based Wound Champ Program. This role epitomizes leadership, advanced knowledge and skill that go beyond the daily routine and expectations of a floor nurse. Jasmyn has demonstrated eagerness and determination to be an advocate for her patients and tenacity to learn best practices in wound care.
A situation occurred recently that demonstrated Jasmyn's compassion, empathy, teamwork, and creativity. This patient was admitted with multiple skin issues and Jasmyn took the initiative to notify the WOCN and explained her assessment and concerns for this patient. She demonstrated knowledge of the patient's condition and medical history. The patient, who was confused and a poor historian, was found in her apartment in a compromised state. Jasmyn recognized the need for appropriate wound care and preventative interventions, so the patient wouldn't develop any new pressure injuries. This patient was being managed by another nurse and yet Jasmyn took it upon herself to assist in the assessment and care of this patient. She demonstrated critical thinking skills and asked important questions in order to provide better outcomes and treatments for this patient.
What was most striking was Jasmyn's comment that demonstrated her desire to be more autonomous with wound care. She said, "I would like to eventually be able to do this without needing your help." She was aware she didn't have all the answers but had taken the initiative to find them. She offered some creative ideas to better manage the patient's multiple issues and collaborated with the WOCN Specialist to provide the best care possible for this patient. She is an example for all St. Luke's nurses and Iam confident she provides the best care for all her patients.
