The emergency department would like to collectively recognize our director, Jan Faulkner. Jan exhibits all the unique, nurse specific qualities that The DAISY Foundation was founded upon. Jan not only can "talk the talk" but honestly "walks the walk" every day even when she isn't aware of anyone watching.
Jan has become a well-known image to the medical field, the nursing profession, and our community Paulding Hospital values: neighbors caring for neighbors and providing safe, quality care to patients. In just the past few years, she has worked extremely hard advocating for improving Paulding's behavioral health process, ultimately improving care and experiences to a vulnerable patient population. She also has been heavily involved with hospital throughput which affects not only patients in the ED but also those who are already admitted. Jan is adamant that all patients, from those waiting to been seen in the ED to those being discharged from the inpatient side, are receiving the most appropriate, safe, and quality care possible.
No one can recall a time when Jan has ever discouraged staff members for following their heart, goals, and/or dreams. She always provides guidance from both a leadership perspective and that of a friend, sister, mother, aunt, or fellow ER co-worker. She makes it a point to reach out to staff and encourages them to jump out of their comfort zone and try something new. She supports them in giving new processes or ideas a chance to trial.
Jan creates an environment of trust, compassion, and respect. She is approachable, available, and confidential with everyone. Jan knows no stranger and holds conversations with every WellStar member she encounters, whether they report to her or not. She consistently rounds on her staff and our patients; she remembers our children's names, who's in school, and what silly thing our spouses did the previous week. She holds herself well as a Director yet is still able to relate to bedside nursing and the normal day to day hospital processes. Some of our staff members describe her as:
"She is the greatest, dedicated, most reliable nurse and I love her very dearly."
"Jan always has a smile on her face and a kind word. She is genuinely concerned about the staff and is very personable."
"When she means business, she means business; but at the same time, she is one of the few leaders that I've worked with who can still relate to bedside nursing...and more importantly make me belly laugh."
