On Sunday my husband was admitted to WMC. His health was rapidly declining and by Friday he was in Palliative Care. By the 7pm shift change, my family and friends were gathered around-standing room only. When Nurse Janet entered the room it was the first time I had ever seen her. After observing the crowded situation, she offered that she thought there would be a larger room available later if we would like to move my husband to it. My children and I were stunned that anyone would make such an offer in a hospital. Janet brushed aside our protests that it would be too much work for them. My husband was moved to the larger room that night. The room was really 2 rooms. My husband was in one room with double doors opening to a sitting room. This room was truly a blessing as we had many family and friends who came to visit.

The next day, I found Janet working on another wing and thanked her for her kindness and thoughtfulness. With so much understanding and compassion she said that my husband was a very special man and he needed a larger place for his family and support network who were surrounding him with so much love. I looked into her eyes and I saw only love and compassion spilling out on me. I told her she was an Angel from God. Then, with tears, we held each other for a very special moment of love and appreciation.

Even when my husband was non-responsive, she had gentleness in her touch and voice whenever she checked on him. She was also very compassionate in communicating any changes in his condition to family members. As it became clear that the end was near, Janet provided recliners and linens so we could all spend the night.

In such a stressful situation, Nurse Janet's presence had a very calming effect on all of us and we were very grateful.
