Some of our nursing positions at Lake Pointe are only known to those who either work in that area or those that utilize that area for service. This DAISY winner has one of those positions. She quietly manages and takes care of our patients who will are scheduled for surgery. The position is responsible for reviewing medical information, educating the patient on pre-operative needs, and ensuring that all tests are performed that are required for a surgical patient at Lake Pointe.

Jane McHugh has been nursing for 34 years and Lake Pointe has been honored to have her for the last 11 years. She makes such an impression on her patients in the pre-admit area (phone and in person) that they are always curious and want to meet her before they leave the building. She has a genuine compassion for her patients and with all who come in contact with her.

Jane's past nursing experiences has shaped who she is today. She has been a “head” nurse of orthopedics and medical/surgical units, has had multiple house supervisor jobs and was a one time a Director over 19 units in a hospital in West Texas. She worked in research for oncology at Breckenridge Hospital in Austin and started their PICC program during her tenure.

One of her older patients wrote, “Jane was very kind to me. My doctor had not sent orders, so she called them and asked them to fax them over. It got to be 12:00 and they still had no orders. She took me to the cafeteria and gave me money to get lunch. I am so grateful to her for all the help she gave me.”

In order to better assist some of her patients, Jane has been studying Spanish to better communicate to our Spanish speaking customers. She has even attended seminars to better acquaint herself with customs and beliefs of certain groups that she may take care of in her job.

Jane is always the first one to call and respond when crisis or emergencies come in the world whether it is the Haiti earthquake or Katrina Hurricane. She wants to know how she can help and is Lake Pointe assisting in these efforts!

The spirit of caring in nursing is not only at the bedside but in every phone call, spoken word and every passing in the hall of a patient, family or fellow employee and Jane exemplifies all these of a true DAISY nurse.
