Yesterday was my second day on the 5th floor as an admitted patient at Winchester Medical Center for the treatment of an ulcerative colitis flare-up. My nurse, Jan, went above and beyond to help me and make sure I was cared for during the few hours I was under her care.
Jan was so attentive and caring for my every need. She caught me at a moment of being emotionally low when I was in tears. She opened her heart to me and continually assured me that I was ok to be crying and that what I was feeling was normal for what I was dealing with. She let me know that during her years of experience she had seen several cases of my condition and that I was going to get through this low time in my life. Her warmth and compassion meant so much to me!
Jan even asked about the medicine I've been taking all these years. I told her I've been taking a rectal enema of Mesalamine, because it was much cheaper than what little my insurance would cover for the pill. The rectal was $10/month as opposed to $90 for 2-3 weeks of the pill. She contacted the pharmacy team here at Winchester Medical Center and had them contact my insurance company to get them to research what my insurance would cover. I had no idea you could even get your insurance company to do that. They found that my insurance would cover the brand name pill for the remission and treatment drug at $25/month supply but wouldn't cover the generic. How crazy is that?
Thanks to Jan my self-esteem has been lifted because I know my feelings are sound and normal. I know that I have people caring for me that sincerely care about my wellbeing, and now I will be able to take medication that I have to take every day that isn't as uncomfortable as an enema at an affordable price. Miss Jan is a true angel and deserves to be recognized for her dedication.
