Before transferring to the Cath Lab, Jamie worked in the Emergency Department where she cared for a patient who was in cardiac arrest. When the patient's condition worsened, Jamie grabbed the patient's wife in a big bear hug and asked if there was anyone she could call for her. The wife had no immediate family in Midland, but handed Jamie the phone and asked her to call her nephew, who does live in Midland. Jamie continued to hold the wife and give her words of comfort until the nephew and his wife arrived. Then, Jamie called the patient and wife's son, who is a firefighter with the Cincinnati Fire Department. "Because of Jamie, I knew what was going on in your ER 1,245 miles away," the son said. Jamie kept the son informed of every step of the procedures being done to his father. The son said that, as a firefighter, he knew that everything Jamie was telling him was not good, but he is so thankful that Jamie didn't try to sugar coat anything. The son asked Jamie to hold the phone to his father's ear so he could talk to him. Thanks to Jamie, the last voice the patient heard before passing away, was his son's. "This has helped me during my grief," the son said. "In my heart, Jamie is a true angel because of what she did for my family and I that night. I truly felt like I was there in the ER with my family as my father passed away. I will forever be grateful to Jamie for what she gave me during this difficult time."
Jamie's clinical manager says that Jamie shows great teamwork and is awesome with patients! Her compassion is subtle and very timely. She is "totally in sync" with her patients.
Because of Jamie's compassionate and caring efforts, her patients experience a level of care that exemplifies the impact nurses have in creating an environment where patients and families feel at home.
