Yesterday, I was partnered with Jamie from 11 am to 3 pm in the yellow zone. She was already dealing with a very seriously ill elderly patient in room 6. The patient's family was not available. I believe her daughter lives on the west coast. During the time that we cared for this patient, the woman was converted to hospice service. Arrangements were being made for her hospice, but the patient declined very quickly.
Jamie was really attentive. She provided comfort measures, along with pain management. And, although she hadn't done this kind of hospice management previously, she worked through to take appropriate care of her patient. When this patient left her physical life, Jamie was at her bedside soothing, holding her hand, and keeping vigil for a person who might have passed alone, without the kindness of a caring nurse.
I'm hopeful that the patient's daughter might know that her mother was so well cared for on Mother's Day.
