James Nelson demonstrates quality through his clinical excellence, Jim is a very knowledgeable and competent clinician who holds himself to the highest standards of patient care. During a recent organ donation case, he was also training a coworker and added an element of balance while a lot was going on during the organ donation process, this is a sign that leaders on his unit recognize his skills as a nurse, and his ability to teach others.
Jim demonstrates hospitality through his kind and thoughtful interactions with LifeSource each time we are on the unit or connect with him over the phone. During this event, he treated me as a trusted colleague, which was continued when my team members and I arrived on site later in the day.
Jim demonstrates respect through his competent and appropriate interactions with not only colleagues on the care team, but with families. The family of this patient was overwhelmed by his ability to demonstrate respect through his tender interactions with them throughout the process.
Jim demonstrates stewardship through his recognition that while this patient would not survive their injuries, there were opportunities to save others through donation. He requested the attending MD initiate a protocol prior to LifeSource arrival onsite as he knew this would preserve organ donation opportunities and ensure this family had the others. It is extremely rare to have a clinician be so cognizant of donation management.
Jim demonstrated his commitment to justice by his appropriate and immediate inclusion of the medical examiner in this case. He recognized that this family deserved to know what happened to their loved one, and ensured that this could be completed without complication by including the ME swiftly and assessing their needs so an investigation could ensue.
Jim demonstrates teamwork through his fierce commitment to collaboration among all members of the care team, his transparent and high-fidelity transmission of information, and his inclusion of all necessary providers to ensure that patients and families receive the highest level of care.
