Jacqueline Brewer, RN – The Troy Daisy Award for Extraordinary Nurses – October 2009 – Troy Beaumont Hospital

Over the course of a few weeks Jacqueline took care of a very challenging patient and his wife. Many of the other nurses had their share of them and would decide day after day that another assignment would fit them better but not Jacqueline. Every day that she worked she took the patient and his wife; everyone was relieved when she was working. The patient seemed to be getting better and was able to be transferred out of their unit. Despite the challenges the patient and wife gave everyone they were still sad to see them leave. The patient was not doing well in PCU and requested his wife to get Jacqueline because “she would know what do do”. The patient ended up coding a few days later and Jacqueline was working, when she heard the code overhead she knew it was him and without hesitation she ran over to PCU. Jacqueline comforted the wife, held her hand and got updates for her. The patient ended up passing away and the wife was able to be there during the first few moments.

The patient’s wife sent a letter thanking everyone for their sensitive kindness during this period, especially Jacqueline.
