Our mother was declining fairly rapidly after a fall she had in her home. She was previously independent, so when we were forced to make decisions about comfort care and hospice, our worlds were turned upside down.
We had one of the most amazing nurses I have ever met. Jacquelene was kind, compassionate, and so patient with our mom as she became combative and resistant to Jacquelene's care. She guided us in the direction that would be best for our mom and family and even treated each family member respectfully regardless of the known family tension and drama.
I came in early every morning, around 430-5, and Jacquelene was always at the bedside talking to our mom and doing what she could to make her comfortable. After spending about a week in a hospital room with her, I can tell you the difference between a nurse who does what they are required to and the nurse who does it because they have the passion for it, and that is exactly the difference between Jacquelene and every other nurse who came in that room. Traits of that nature can't be taught.
Our mom passed in the hospital before we were able to take her home. This was completely against our initial plan, but I'm at peace with it because I know our mom got the best care she could have in her last days simply because Jacquelene was at her side. It was as if it was her own mom she was caring for. We will never forget what an impact she made on our family. A true blessing.
