I was a new patient at the Alexandria Clinic a couple of weeks ago. I had an incident at the beginning of this year that left me paralyzed pretty much from the neck down. Since then people have treated me like an invalid. From the moment Jaclyn brought me back to the room to prepare me for my appointment until the minute she was done, she treated me like a normal person. She didn't question me once if I was able to do certain things. For example, since I was paralyzed no one has asked me for my signature, assuming I can't write. Jaclyn didn't even hesitate to ask me for my signature, which I was able to do.
She was very helpful in making sure I had all the resources I was going to need. She handed me my doctor's business card with nurses' information on it. Even when I struggled to get the business card into my small pouch I carry, she didn't offer to help right away. Some of you might think that is a bad thing, but let me tell you, it's taken as offensive at times.
Jaclyn let me do everything myself without questioning. Her actions and attitude in the short half-hour I was with her meant more to me and had more impact on me than anyone else I have dealt with in the medical field or outside of the medical field since my incident.
I have deep gratitude and respect for her. I wish there were more nurses or people like her in the world.
