Jackie, by default at first, had taken care of a chemotherapy desensitization patient who came for multiple treatments in ICU. After a few visits, the patient felt so comfortable with her she asked if Jackie could be her nurse each time she came in for treatment. Jackie even came to me to see if she could switch her schedule to be here for the patient.
On her last round of chemotherapy, Jackie had her again and when she was reflecting on the time they got to know each other during her treatments, Jackie wanted to finish her visits in the most memorable way. She remembered infusion had a bell that the patient would ring when they finished their chemotherapy regimen. Jackie suggested and upon discharge, coordinated taking the patient up to the infusion unit to ring the bell to celebrate with the patient and her family this victory.
The patient was so truly appreciative of Jackie going out of her way to make this a memorable day.
