Recently Jackie took care of a young teenage boy who was having surgery on his birthday. He had broken his arm the day before so surgery was needed. The boy was down and gloomy preoperatively no matter what the nurses did to cheer him. Jackie got him postop and was preparing to discharge him. Right before he was wheeled out, Jackie told the patient and his family there was one more thing to do. She secretively ran down to the cafe to get the patient a piece of cake. The cafeteria prepared a cake with ice cream and she bought a balloon. Jackie returned to the unit, gathered the staff and surprised the patient by coming around the corner singing "Happy Birthday". The boy's face lit up and he smiled ear to ear. Jackie had taken the time to go the extra mile and brighten this patient's day. The family was so appreciative that they posted the picture on Facebook and bragged about the care he received.
