Irene displayed a random act of kindness to one of our patients in the MICU. This unfortunate 19 year old patient suffered an acute onset of progressive weakness. She remains completely intact but unable to move any of her extremities. Her medical condition left her requiring intubation and mechanical ventilation and unfortunately her recovery is unknown. Her story touched the nurses in the ICU and many have developed close connection with the patient and her family. Irene developed a special bond with the patient and brings a smile to her care whenever she knows she will be the nurse for the evening.

Irene has done those extra things remembering that our patient is not "just a patient" suffering from an illness but a young women who lost more than her movement but the ability to participate in the exciting things girls her age experience. Our patient has a special liking for the Penguins. When caring for this young lady, they would talk hockey and have the games on TV. Irene made a connection with a Pittsburgh Penguins Wives Charity and with the mom's permission made them aware of her situation.

Irene presented her with a special card, signed photo and autographed jersey from Kris Letang from the Pittsburgh Penguins. Her smile said it all!
