I arrived at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center Emergency Department with left lower abdominal pain. I thought I may have trapped gas or an issue with my ovary. However, my diagnosis was diverticulitis with rupture and a perforated colon. This was no doubt an overwhelming diagnosis for anyone to hear, but was especially difficult for me to accept.
My daughter was set to get married in four days at my home on the river, and I was no longer able to attend. My daughter and her fiancé did not want to get married without me being present. My daughter made arrangements with the Chaplin to allow her to get married in the hospital chapel.
I was overwhelmed with the state of my health and the unexpected changes of plans for the wedding. Nurse Holly came into my room with her sweet smile and said she had heard some of our story. She was so kind and sympathetic to me and my daughter. She is a caring, compassionate, and skilled professional. She took excellent care of my needs. She was always prompt when I called for her and she even checked on me when I had not called. I am a 21 year Covenant Homecare employee and understand our mission is to provide excellent care to our patients, but Holly does that and beyond.
When Holly heard my daughter was going to be getting married in the chapel, she insisted on making her a wedding cake. It was beautiful, and she delivered this cake on her day off.
Working all those years myself, I have had so many patients tell me how much they appreciate me. However, you really cannot understand how much you appreciate the care, compassion, and competence of your health care provider until you are the patient. Holly has done so much for meand my family. She is really like an angel and she is an excellent choice for the DAISY Award. Holly really set the bar for excellent care!
