Imagine how scary it would be to have a pneumothorax and have to go to the hospital to have a chest tube be put in. Now imagine that as a teenager. Hiram Diaz went above and beyond what I would consider is the normal role of a nurse. A few days after D was admitted he met Hiram who was his nurse on duty. D was able to immediately bond with Hiram, due to the fact that Hiram was genuine when he interacted with D. Hiram was not phony, nor did he force the interaction, it came naturally which we all appreciated, especially D. Hiram addressed our concerns timely and professionally, but also made each interaction very personable, something a teenager can relate to. If I had to run out to get food or supplies, D felt comfortable being left for a short time, but only if Hiram was on duty. Hiram was also one of the few nurses that had a good knowledge of the Oasis water seal chest drainage box, Tru Close Thoracic vent and it's components/settings. A few times when we felt we were not getting feedback timely, Hiram was an advocate for D and followed up as needed, until our concerns were addressed. Hiram made a rather unpleasant procedure/experience more pleasant by being someone my son could count on and comfortably interact with.
It is not only the opinion of our son, but also our opinion that Hiram truly has and exhibits the characteristics of a true nurse. Hiram exhibits compassion, commitment to his patients, professionalism, and the drive to make the day of each of his patients better, while under his care. I know he has left an impression on my son and us as well. We really appreciate his commitment to his profession.
