Let me begin by saying that Hillary Licata was my preceptor for my orientation in the ICU. This may bias me, however, I feel it also gives me the unique perspective of someone who has seen the entirety of a day in the life of Hillary.
I have seen firsthand, the meticulous care that she provides for her patients. A certain patient had been with the ICU for a while, waiting for a transplant. Knowing all that could go wrong, she followed every policy to the T. She wanted to ensure that the patient received the best practice evidence had to offer. When it came time to take the easy way out, or continue to do best practice, she consistently did what was right even if it was more difficult. She never faltered, or hesitated in her pursuit of the best outcomes. Even further than that, she made sure the family was comfortable, following up long after he had left the ICU. This is just one of many families that Hillary has touched.
She is not only compassionate to her patients but her coworkers as well. She encourages them to do their best by always being available for help, education, or even a second opinion. She follows through on all her promises, brings an enthusiasm to the unit that is infectious. Even in the face of conflict, she is respectful and compassionate. She always attempts to resolve issues with mutually beneficial conclusions.
I consider Hillary an example to be followed. Careful in all her work, compassionate to all her patients, with a positive attitude that brings spirit to her coworkers. I am proud to tell anyone who asks that she taught me. I also believe she is deserving of this award for all of her efforts to be a fantastic leader, and for really emphasizing the evidenced-based part of nursing.
