While rounding on patients, a patient and her family wanted me to recognize Hillary for truly going above and beyond. When I asked the patient why, she had a multitude of examples and I could tell she was moved by Hillary's care. The patient described how Hillary truly listened to them. The patient told me how she had had pain in her arm for three days and the other nurses had been managing her pain, but the patient stated, "When Hillary came on, she really heard what I was saying." Hillary brought her arm pain to the attention of the doctor and they performed an ultrasound and it was found the patient had multiple DVTs from a PICC line she had previously removed. The patient was able to get appropriate interventions and she will be forever grateful for Hillary.
Hillary cared for the patient in the neuro ICU and again on the neuro step-down unit (where the DVT was found). The patient went on to share with me that Hillary remembered the little conversations from the ICU with the patient's family, asking about the patient's family trip and how her homemade applesauce turned out; this showed the patient that Hillary actually cared. The patient appreciated that Hillary did not only care for her as the patient but for her family. This embodies our whole-person care.
When I asked the patient if I could nominate Hillary for the DAISY Award and after explaining the award her response was, "Yes, please do! Hillary is much deserving."
