Both of my parents were patients at Christ Hospital. My mother was in for three weeks and my father for one with about two weeks between their stays. Helen was there taking care of both of them.
The level of care and overall concern for the welfare of both my parents was exemplary. I truly believe that their outcomes would not have been as positive without her involvement. The strength of her voice, her confidence in her ability to assess their needs and act appropriately, her integrity to always do what is right for her patient, and her cheery disposition in the face of adversity are just some of her skills.
Recognizing our family name from the three weeks with my mother, Helen saw my father on the patient roster and came to see us. Not only did she take care of my dad as her first priority, but asked about my mom expressing genuine concern for her.
A full month of my life was spent at Christ Hospital. When that kind of time is spent somewhere relationships develop and trust is either created or destroyed. There is no exaggeration when I tell that without Helen I would never have been comfortable leaving either of my parents alone for long periods of time. This is not to say other nurses weren't terrific, but Helen went above and beyond every chance she could.
She worked for my parents but also for me and my brother. She made sure she communicated with each of us regarding my mother's progress or concern for lack of progress. Helen never hesitated to call us if she felt it was necessary, and for that we are forever in her debt.
God bless Helen for every minute she spent with my family. She was far more than a nurse to us and she will forever be considered as part of our family.
