In April, one of my patients was admitted to 3 West from the ER in the middle of the night. Helen Allen was the nurse that admitted her to 3 West.

This particular patient has had multiple admissions to the hospital, usually to 5 West as she is a transplant patient, but this time she got admitted to 3 West. She is a difficult patient in many ways, both medically as well as behaviorally.

The purpose of this Daisy nomination is to give some positive feedback concerning Helen Allen, RN. Helen was very busy that night, involved in giving a blood transfusion to another patient. When I tried to call in to give orders on my patient, Helen was unable to take the orders, but did come on the phone to speak to me and explain how she was tied up with the blood transfusion, but would be able to take my orders at a later point. She actually called me when she was done and we went over a series of very complicated orders.

I was impressed with how thorough Helen was in terms of having made herself somewhat familiar with the patient’s home medications, which made it easier for me to order them and make the necessary changes. In addition, there was significant confusion in terms of what I had asked the ER physician to do and what actually had been done in the ER. Helen took some extra time to clarify exactly which cultures were done in the ER, whether they were collected properly, and which antibiotics had actually been given to the patient. This also saved me significant time in not having to sort through this all on my own, and in addition, allowed me to prescribe the proper antibiotics in amore timely fashion, which was an obvious benefit to the patient.

I had several interactions with Helen that night and also the following morning when I came in early to see the patient. With all of my interactions with Helen, I was impressed with her professionalism and her friendliness.
