I called the labor/delivery floor to get advice on what to do after my water broke. As a first-time mom and dad, my husband and I were looking for direction and reassurance!
I was a little early for delivery and things were rather out of order as far as labor, contractions, and water breaking, so the childbirth class we had attended felt somewhat out of touch with our situation. Heidi was helpful during those early moments of evaluating when to come and how to feel about all of it.
Later, Heidi became my main labor and delivery nurse (this was already her next shift due to how long it took my labor to progress), and she was again helpful with evaluating interventions and offering suggestions on how to achieve the natural labor & delivery I was looking for. When it came down to the end, and I was in the most intense parts of the birthing process, Heidi was 100% professional, calm and compassionate. Her job could probably have been a lot easier if I had been using pain medication, but she did not begrudge me for that; she respected the route I had chosen and made it her goal to help me get where I was trying to go successfully.
My birthing process was excellent, not just because of Heidi, but also because of each staff member who was there during our three night/four-day stay. So many others were supportive of our adjustment and our process. Heidi especially made a difference during the most critical moments of the birth of our son.
My Husband would like to add:
I would not have known what to do unless Heidi had been supporting me simultaneously as she helped my wife. I felt stressed out to the absolute max about the whole process, but when she was in the room, I felt so much calmer because she knew what she was doing and was there to help. In all my years of retail, banking, and other customer service positions, I haven't met someone more adept at her role of assisting patiently, graciously, and "indefinitely" - because who knows how long labor will actually last?! Heidi was totally invested in doing her job well no matter how difficult. She knew what to say, what not to say, when to step in, and how to help my wife move through the different phases of her labor, all the way until our little boy finally came into the world!
