Heather has been a nurse on the Hematology/Oncology floor at Rady Children's Hospital San Diego for 3 years. She started out in the new grad program and has been an integral part of the team ever since. This has been Heather’s third nomination since our Daisy Award program has started. Each nomination by thankful family members or patients she has taken care of. A patient wrote, “ She comes in and makes sure I am not sad and that I don’t just sit around. I would be a turtle without her.” Another mother was very thankful for the time Heather spent with her daughter after being transferred from PICU. She felt that Heather spent quality time with her daughter in order to make sure she felt safe and in good hands. She mentioned her appreciation that Heather took the time to stay and give her a bath and make her feel comfortable. Heather has also shown interest in helping our patients and families at end of life. She has been to the End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium and is on the Palliative RN Practice Committee. She was nominated for the Daisy award from a mother who recently lost her daughter to cancer. This patient had a long and difficult hospitalization, diagnosed with a brain tumor, a long PICU stay, and many complications. Heather helped the family transition to Hem/Onc and became her primary nurse. When it became clear that cure was no longer possible, she advocated for her comfort and companioned the family through end of life. She gave them extraordinary care in such a difficult time. She will never be forgotten by them and we are proud to have her as our Daisy Award winner.
