We had a patient who had a history of ulcerative colitis and was having a really bad day. She didn't feel normal, she didn't have anyone to talk to, and she was really struggling. I told her that her nurse had an ostomy and her eyes lit up and she expressed surprise. Hayley went into the room and spent well over 30 minutes talking to the patient and answering her questions. She even went and got her own ostomy bag to show her. I got a phone call several days later that the patient was facing her surgery that week and she really wanted to talk to Hayley again about it. She was so comforting to this girl, and gave her insight to what it's really like. She was so grateful that Hayley was open and willing to share a little bit about what it is like to be a teenager with an ostomy.
