Harry provides extraordinary service day in and day out here on 2 East. Harry makes a difference for both the nurses and the patients using the VA ICARE principles every time he gives care. One example, in particular, is when the MD placed an order for NGT placement right at shift change (1945). Harry did not hesitate at all to help when he could have just as easily passed it on to the night shift. I will explain how Harry used each ICARE principle in this situation in particular.
I- integrity - Harry made himself available and proved that he is a reliable team member. With everyone being busy and a bit overwhelmed at shift change Harry did not hesitate to help me place the NGT. He did not do this to be noticed or to receive any type of recognition. He truly wanted to help both his team member and the patient.
C-Commitment - Harry was committed to providing the best care for the patient; even if it meant he had to stay at work late. Due to two failed attempts and the MD's unwillingness to come to bedside for placement of NGT Harry stayed an hour late helping to place the NGT. He was able to place the NGT on the third attempt. This shows true commitment to not only the patient but to his team and the mission of the VA.
A-Advocacy- Before arriving for my shift Harry used interdisciplinary communication between both the MD and radiologist to ensure that the proper treatment was provided to the patient. Harry advocated for the patient to get an abdominal x-ray after he suspected an ileus. The radiologist was unable to contact the MD so Harry made sure the MD was notified and made aware of the abdominal x-ray results. It was not until Harry made a suggestion for treatment that the MD placed orders into CPRS. Harry truly has the veterans best interest at heart and was willing to advocate for this patient until the proper treatment was prescribed.
R-Respect- Harry demonstrated this principle very well. When faced with adversity from the MD, Harry was very respectful. He made sure that he advocated for the patient in the most respectful manner and never once did he show any signs of disrespect. He demonstrated proper dignity and respect while at the bedside for NGT placement; not allowing any of the problems he encountered interfere with patient care/patient interaction.
E-Excellence - Harry exceeds all expectations when it comes to patient care. He went above and beyond to ensure proper treatment for this patient was received. He is thoughtful in his decision making and continuously strives to improve patient care.
This is just one of many examples I could give for Harry demonstrating the ICARE principles. He demonstrates these principles daily and is an awesome team member. Harry is an exceptional nurse and true asset to our team here on 2 East. He is always willing to help. If he is not available to help, he will go out of his way to make himself available. He is very good at prioritizing patient care and knowing the needs of his fellow team members. He is a real leader and makes a difference on our unit. He is kind, compassionate, and truly a role model. He is very knowledgeable and willing to help and educate others.
