Hannah has been my family's primary care provider for a couple of years. My husband had to come to her with some pain in a very sensitive body part. As a younger man, he was really nervous about anything "down there" that could be happening and wasn't sure if he would need a specialist or not. Hannah showed him that she understood his concern without making him feel foolish for having it. She was gentle and thorough when she examined him. He said she really made him feel listened to and that he had made the right call in getting it checked out. She gave him a prescription and told him when and how to use it. She also talked about what to do if it didn't get better in a week and how she would reach out to a specialist just to be sure. The part that really impressed him, though, was that she then asked about how he was doing emotionally. We had a baby a few months back and she remembered that even though she doesn't see the baby. She spent extra time listening to him talk about the stress if parenting, the lack of sleep and how it's been challenging with things changing. He came home and told me, "I have never felt more cared about, not just cared for, in my whole life." For my husband, who is not a big talker, and not overly emotional, to spill his feeling so much and feel good about it means Hannah must really have been doing something amazing. She must have listened and reassured him in a way that made a scary appointment safe. And it wasn't some big emergency or a strange disease. It was just an average appointment. But she made something whole in him by listening and supporting him in his need. This is why she will be our go-to nurse practitioner for as long as we can have her. Whidbey Island is blessed to have Hannah Carlson.
