Greg had finished his day at the League City Campus. While attempting to exit our building, he found an EVS staff member leaning on the wall and slumped down. He stopped to inquire if the employee was okay and if they needed any assistance. The employee reported they were not feeling well, I believe they had a near syncopal episode. Greg stopped to aide, found a wheelchair and escorted the employee to the LCC ED.
Upon arriving at the ED, it was very clear the department was overwhelmed beyond capacity with an extremely high census of high acuity patients. Our day Charge Nurse greeted Greg and she said at that moment, "It was like a prayer answered." She got the employee triaged and placed in a room. She then explained to Greg the current ED situation and that they were expecting a CPR in progress from EMS at any moment. She said with no hesitation Greg offered his assistance and began to help prepare our medicine crash area for the expected patient.
Greg aided during that medicine code patient and even stayed after to provide his assistance to our ED staff. Greg went above and beyond his call of duty to that day; he made a difference in not only our patients' lives but our very UTMB staff. The LCC ED staff were in total awe and amazed by Greg's actions. He not only attempted to save the patients that evening but he provided support to our LCC ED team. His actions speak louder than any words and illustrate what our UTMB mission is all about. He is not only an asset to our organization but exemplifies the nursing profession itself.
This is just one example. I often hear from staff that Greg volunteers with EMS and will bring patients to our ED. He is always kind and usually stays more than what is required to ensure the patients get settled and aide in allaying fears. His actions are a clear representation of true compassion and devotion to patients which is one of the core values of this nursing award.
