Greg has been a long time nurse at Lutheran Hospital working in both the cath lab and ER prior to coming to the IV team. He has years of experience (almost 25 years)! Recently, our med/surg unit had a patient code. All the nurses on this entire M/S team (aside from myself, the nurse manager) have been nurses for less than five years. Greg presented to the code, assessed the IV site, and I think he truly understood how green the nurses were, because he stepped right up and assisted with CPR, instructed nurses when needed, was extremely calm, and knew exactly what we needed to do. He stayed through until the end of the code setting aside his duties in order to help us try and save this patient. This patient actually reached up and touched Greg while he was doing CPR, and he spoke kind words to her. In the end, the patient did not recover, however, this entire unit commented and voiced appreciation for Greg staying and assisting. Being a mentor to new nurses who have never experienced a code or a death before and the effect it had on them was incredible. Greg made a serious difference to these nurses and, moving forward in their careers, will have a lasting impression on them. Teaching and mentoring and remaining calm and reassuring was much appreciated and needed at the time. Greg did countless amounts of CPR on this patient and he stepped back in when others were tired and offered his assistance throughout the code.
