It was the day after receiving life-changing news. I was overwhelmed, terrified. My sister gave my number to a nurse at her hospital as she knew I needed support. Gina first called ey at 9 PM at night. I was shocked that this person was calling me so late. I was convinced this must be overtime for her. For me, it didn't matter the time of night. I needed this call and Gina knew it. I knew nothing about breast cancer. She quickly filled me in on the details of cancer. I was overwhelmed by her knowledge and warmth she extended across many miles. The next day I went to my first oncology appointment more prepared to ask questions and able to understand what the doctor was saying to me. I would not have been able to comprehend much of that first appointment without Gina calling me the night before. This was not the end of Gina's support. Each test, each step, she was there. She used her humor, her knowledge, and warmth to guide me through each step. I felt more supported and educated by a nurse who was over 600 miles away than I did from a nurse in my very own hospital. Gina is a special person. A dedicated nurse who reaches her patients through her passion and dedication. I feel very fortunate to have had Gina on my team. She made me feel educated, cared for, and supported. She is a treasure.
