We had a pre-op patient come to registration for a mastectomy. Once she arrived she decided she was too nervous and left. When Dr. B was notified he was very worried since she had cancelled several times and the surgery needed to be done. His office got ahold of the patient and she came back in. She was very anxious and needed time before putting on a gown and having an IV started. Gillian was her nurse.
Gillian was beyond kind, patient and comforting to her, her dad and young son. She had lost her mom to breast cancer and feared the worst for herself. Gillian spent time with her talking about her future and her young son and how we would need her to take care of herself so she would be with him as long as possible. The patient had the mass on her breast for a while and now it was draining. She found comfort and trust in Gillian. Gillian told her if it would help, she would try to go into surgery and be with her.
With Dr. B's permission, Gillian went in the OR and was at her side. This was noticed and appreciated by the patient and family. I am grateful that we have a nurse with a kind and compassionate heart.
Dr. B writes, "Gillian, taking extra care of this patient, clearly made a difference in her care. Without her kind words and support this patient was in danger of not agreeing to a lifesaving operation. Thank you Gillian, for caring."
