Gemma had the opportunity to be L's nurse quite a few times during his frequent admissions on the pulmonary floor.
Her efforts to understand his treatment requirements and compassion for our patient was evident in her troubleshooting abilities when issues arose. L was a very medically complicated patient, to say the least, and he suffered for 3 ½ years and then succumbed to complications of cGVHD after a stem cell transplant for MDS. He also struggled with an autoimmune disease known as Ankylosing Spondylitis.
L experienced high levels of anxiety and Gemma's comforting voice and cheerful disposition always put him at ease. Her willingness to provide extra care when he needed it was a relief and took so much patience on both their parts.
My daughter and I knew that when Gemma was on duty, we had no worries because we agreed with whatever decision she felt was best for the patient.
L's last day was a sad conclusion to the saga, however, we will remember all the thoughtful, diligent and experienced nurses on 14, especially Gemma.
