I was fortunate enough to witness Gaylin care for a postpartum mother that survived HELLP syndrome.* Gaylin was an amazing team leader, she was able to organize and communicate effectively with the staff, give compassionate care to the mom, support the dad and unite the newborn baby with the parents during her critical recovery process.

Gaylin was so moved by this experience that she wanted to share her knowledge with others. She spearheaded a Grand Rounds presentation. She called the presentation "HELP, HELP I need somebody." She gathered nurses from the PACU, ICU and Maternity to assist with the presentation. As part of the presentation, the patient and her entire family came. Gaylin was able to reunite with her patient and family. It was a truly moving experience not just for Gaylin, but for everyone involved.

I can safely say that anyone who has had the pleasure of working with Gaylin would agree that she personifies the DAISY Award with her exemplary compassionate care.

...

Gaylin is an extraordinary nurse and role model. She continues to teach staff around her, perform charge nurse duties, participate on the UAC and IV Therapy committees and has recently completed her Level IV CAP.

*Note: HELLP syndrome is a life threatening pregnancy complication usually considered to be a variant of preeclampsia. Both conditions usually occur during the later stages of pregnancy, or sometimes after childbirth. H (hemolysis, which is the breaking down of red blood cells), EL (elevated liver enzymes) and LP (low platelet count).
